Motability provides our customers with worry-free mobility. The information here will help to answer any questions you have about your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle and your agreement with us.

Your agreement

Whether you would like to add a named driver onto your insurance policy, are a young driver on the Scheme, or would like to renew, extend or end your agreement, you will find the following information useful.

Insurance

Your worry-free package includes car insurance with RSA Motability (RSAM). Only drivers approved by RSAM and named as permitted drivers on your Certificate of Motor Insurance are insured to drive. If you intend to drive the car yourself, you must be named as a permitted driver on the Certificate.

Who can I put on the insurance?

Our worry-free package includes insurance for up to two drivers , these can be yourself, friends, relatives or carers. You can also add a third driver for an additional cost. All proposed drivers will be subject to Motability’s policies on who can drive your car and must also meet RSA Motability's (RSAM) eligibility criteria regardless of whether they are added at application or during your lease.

We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.

Only drivers listed as permitted drivers on the Certificate of Motor Insurance are insured to drive your Motability car. Remember, the car must be used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled person will benefit. Are there any limits to the Insurance Groups of a car I can apply for?

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) grade vehicles on a scale of 1 to 50. From 1 January 2012, drivers aged under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower and with a power output of 115 brake horsepower or less.

If you ordered your car before 1 January 2012 and you currently have drivers aged under 25, as long as they remain named on your Certificate of Motor Insurance, they can continue to drive your current car for the remainder of your lease. More information on who can drive your car

My tax is overdue and I have no new tax disc

We send the tax disc out directly to the customer's address. If the due date of your tax has passed, or you need a duplicate for any reason, you can contact our Customer Services team to check the status. If you have changed your address, you can tell us using the update your details form .

What should I do if my car isn't running properly?

If your car is not running properly, needs repairs or replacement parts, you should contact your Motability dealer to book your car in for a maintenance inspection. You should not be charged for mechanical repairs or servicing normal wear and tear on the vehicle. If the problem is not resolved following the inspection and your dealer is unable to help you, contact our Customer Services team with full details of the problems and the outcome of the dealer inspection.

I have got some minor damage to my car do I have to set up a claim?

Any damage to a car must be reported, however it may not require repair. Please contact RSA Motability who will assess the extent of damage to the car. They will advise you whether repairs need to be carried out or postponed until the end of your agreement. Should a repair be identified at the end of your agreement, then this should be carried out as conversation.

Am I covered for damage to the interior of the car?

Your insurance policy does not cover loss or damage to trim and upholstery in the car, unless this arises as a result of an accident which requires bodywork repair and or mechanical repairs.

What if the car is damaged by a mobility aid?

Damage caused by wheelchairs or other mobility aids such as; callipers, crutches and walking sticks will be classed as fair wear and tear, and we do not expect the damage to be repaired. This also applies if another member of the family has caused the damage with their wheelchair or mobility aid.

What happens if the car fails its MOT?

Cars needs to pass their MOTs before the car is handed back. If it fails the MOT, the issue that has caused the failure would need to be rectified and the car would need to be re-tested at the dealership.
