WAV stands for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. This means you can travel in the vehicle while seat in your wheelchair

Personalised number plates

You can add personalised number plates to your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) and see your V5C document number in your online account.

It’s your responsibility to make sure you follow the DVLA’s instructions, and that your plate is not offensive to others.

Adding personalised plates at the start of your lease

Some dealers can assign personalised number plates for you before you collect your new car or get your new Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. You'll need to arrange this with them before your vehicle is registered.

They'll need the Certificate of Entitlement (V750) if the plates have not been used yet, or Retention Certificate (V778) if they've been registered on another vehicle. You get both of these from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

If the dealer cannot add personalised plates, or have already registered your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, please accept your new vehicle with standard plates, then follow our instructions below.

Manage your personalised plate in your account

You can now add, remove and keep your personalised plate in your online account. This is the quickest and simplest way to make these changes during your lease.

Adding plates during your lease

If you've already collected your car or got your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle you can now add your personalised plate and see your V5C document number in your online account. Then follow the DVLA’s online instructions(opens in a new window) to assign your plates to your new vehicle.

Depending whether or not the plates have been registered on another car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle before, you'll need your Certificate of Entitlement (V750) or Retention Certificate (V778) to hand.

Contact us if you're having trouble with the online instructions. We'll be happy to help.

Removing plates at the end of your lease

You can remove and keep your personalised plate in your online accountIf you do not want to do that, we'll send you a letter about four weeks before the end of your lease with more information about removing your personalised plates.

If you want to keep them to use in the future, you'll need to keep them registered with the DVLA.

You can complete the first half of what you need to do on the DVLA website(opens in a new window). You'll need:

  • The plate number you want to keep
  • Your postcode (where the car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is registered)
  • The document number from the V5C registration certificate. We'll send this to you about four weeks before the end of your lease. If you do not receive this or you lose it, you can ask us for a copy in your online account

If you want to assign your plates to your next Scheme car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, ask your dealer if they can do this for you. Try to speak to them as soon as possible.

If you do not want to keep your personalised plates, contact our customer services team on 0300 456 4566 or speak to us using web messenger as soon as possible to let us know you're happy to let go of your rights to the plates.

If you choose this, we'll sell the car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle at the end of your lease with your personalised number plates on it. This means you’ll lose the right to display this number plate on a car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle in the future.

If you do not tell us your plans before the end of your lease we cannot accept any responsibility for keeping or giving your plates back. Please speak to your dealer before your lease ends, contact us on 0300 456 4566 or speak to us using web messenger.
