Motability Scheme for non-drivers

Many of you often tell us how much independence a Motability car can provide. But what if you don’t drive? Can you still enjoy the freedom that leasing with Motability brings? We’ve rounded up some of your most frequently asked questions about the hows and whys of the Scheme if you’re a non-driver.

If I don’t drive, can I still come onto the Motability Scheme?

If you receive one of the relevant allowances , but do not wish to or are unable to drive, it’s possible to add named drivers onto your insurance who will be able to drive the car for you. Up to two named drivers are included as part of your lease; these can be friends, family or carers. You can also add a third driver for an additional cost.

If you would like to add or change drivers, please contact RSA Motability (RSAM) on 0300 037 3737.

Who can I add as a named driver?

When adding named drivers onto your policy, there are a few rules that you will need to be aware of.

Named drivers should live within five miles of the disabled customer’s address – requests to include drivers outside of this range will be considered where this is essential to support your mobility needs.

We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.

There are also some rules surrounding younger drivers.

More about who can drive your car

What do I need to do to add a third driver?

You will need to pay an additional premium, which is £73 for each year (or part year) remaining on the policy. If you are in the first year of your lease, this will cost £219.

RSAM can also provide third driver cover for short periods of 30 days or less for an additional cost of £29. The payment must be made in full and can be paid with a credit or debit card over the phone.

You will need to provide RSAM with the full driving history of the person being added onto the policy.

What information do I need to give to add to a driver?

To add a driver to your insurance policy, you will need to make sure the proposed driver is with you when you call RSAM so they can consent for us to check their driving licence details with the DVLA. In exceptional circumstances where this is not possible, RSAM will discuss alternative options with you. For any changes you will need to provide the following information about the driver:

  • Postcode
  • Date of birth
  • Driving licence number
  • Date they passed their driving test
  • Details of any licence endorsements, penalty points or disqualifications they have had in the last five years

We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.

Is it possible to add a temporary driver?

You may require a temporary driver when you go on holiday or when relatives come to visit for example. A temporary driver can be added onto your policy for up to 30 days at a time and must always abide the Scheme rules and use the car for your benefit. However, if you rely on this driver multiple times throughout the year, they must be included on your Certificate of Motor Insurance as a permanent driver. Please remember that temporary driver additions cannot be used as a substitute for a permanent driver.

Do I have to be in the car when it is being used?

The car must be used by, or for the benefit of the disabled person . This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means that other named drivers in the same household can use the car for shopping, visiting family and other routine activities, so long as the disabled customer will benefit.

Remember also that everyone who drives the car must be named on the Certificate of Motor Insurance issued by RSAM. If you want to add or change a driver, call RSAM on 0300 037 3737 and they will update the details for you.

I have a number of carers, can they all drive the car?

It may be possible to accommodate those with many different carers, who may change regularly. You will need to contact RSA Motability to ask about an Open Policy which allows multiple drivers on the insurance. RSAM may require documentary evidence or copies of driving licences. All drivers must meet the Scheme’s insurance eligibility criteria through the life of the policy.
