Extending your lease

You might be able to keep your vehicle for longer and extend your lease beyond when it’s due to end, depending on your circumstances.

Keeping your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) for longer

If you need more time to look for a new vehicle, you might be able to extend the lease on your current car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle.

You'll continue to get everything in your worry-free lease package if your lease is extended. You can order your next vehicle at any time during your extension, so you do not have wait if you see a vehicle you like.

The easiest way to see your options is in the ‘Current lease' section in your Motability Scheme online account. You’ll see this if you're within the last three months of your lease.

We'll also explain your options in the letter we send to you around three months before the end of your lease.

You'll still need an MOT test if you extend your lease. You'll need to get this done within the last three months of your lease and before you hand your vehicle back or extend your lease.

We recommend you book your MOT in for at least one month before it's due, to allow time for anything to be fixed before your MOT expires.

You'll also need to book another MOT test every 12 months.

This means if your lease is extended for two years, you might need to get another two MOT tests before you hand your vehicle back.

The cost of your MOT test is included in your Scheme lease.

Extending your lease will not affect whether you’re eligible to get payments like the Good Condition Payment and New Vehicle Payment.
