What difference could the Motability Scheme make to you?
The Motability Scheme provides a huge choice of affordable cars, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), scooters and powered wheelchairs for disabled people. Over the past 35 years, over 4 million people have benefited from worry-free motoring made possible by the Scheme. Find out whether it can benefit you too.
What are the benefits?
To join the Motability Scheme, you exchange all or part of your mobility allowance to lease the vehicle of your choice.
Apart from fuel, everything you'll need is provided as part of the leasing package:
- You'll be fully insured
- Full breakdown assistance is included
- All servicing, maintenance and repairs are covered so there are no unexpected repair bills
- If you choose to lease a car or WAV, you can name two drivers on your insurance so you can still enjoy worry-free motoring even if you don't drive.
After three years, either hand back your car, or if you'd like to stay on the Motability Scheme, you can choose to lease a new vehicle for another three years.
Are you eligible?
If you’ve recently received a leaflet from the Department from Work and Pensions which includes the code DWP17-4, you are very likely to be eligible to apply. All you need to join the Scheme is at least 12 months remaining on one of the following allowances:
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance
- Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
Once you have decided that the Scheme might be right for you, it's time to view the range of vehicles available.

Here's some more information on how to lease a vehicle and how much it may cost.
Leasing a car
The Motability Scheme has a wide range of over 2,000 cars to choose from. There are three pricing options :
Cars that cost less than your mobility allowance
This means you keep any money left over
Cars that cost the same as your mobility allowance
You swap your allowance for the car of your choice
Using your full mobility allowance and an Advance Payment
This allows you to increase your choice further with a one-off payment known as an Advance Payment
Getting an adaptation
If you find driving or travelling difficult or uncomfortable, adaptations might help. The Scheme currently offers over 350 different adaptations to help with driving (e.g. steering aids), access (e.g. swivel seats) and stowage (e.g. boot and roof hoists). Many of these are available for no extra cost when fitted at the start of a lease.
Leasing a WAV
WAVs have been converted so that wheelchair users can travel in them while remaining in their wheelchair, either as a passenger or driver. There are different types and WAV converters can help you find one to suit your needs. Brand new WAVs are available on a five year lease with a mileage allowance of 100,000 miles.
Leasing a Nearly New WAV
We also offer a range of Nearly New WAVs on a three year lease. These are often a more affordable way to lease a WAV as they come with a lower Advance Payment than the equivalent new WAV. Speak to your supplier about your needs so they can help you find a suitable vehicle.
Leasing a scooter
If your lifestyle is more suited to short journeys and you can travel fairly independently, a scooter could help you. There are more than 300 products from small boot scooters to large road ready models. All our scooters have a £100 Non-refundable Payment, but they all cost less than your allowance so you'll have money left over.
Leasing a powered wheelchair
If you need more mobility support than a scooter might provide, we also have a range of powered wheelchairs available. These include basic standard models, many with adaptations, and custom-built models if you have specific mobility needs. All our standard models have a £100 Non-refundable Payment.
