At Motability we do everything we can to help disabled people achieve greater mobility so they can be independent and enjoy their lives more fully.
We raise funds to provide financial assistance for those disabled people who cannot afford essential vehicle adaptations, higher specification vehicles, driving lessons or a combination of all three. They are typically some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged adults and children in the UK.
We rely entirely on voluntary income to carry out our charitable work, and are extremely grateful for the support of grant making organisations that have already helped many thousands of disabled people across the UK.
In 2008/09 our charitable work helped over 3,000 disabled people become mobile, but already this year, applications to Motability for help have increased. Motability urgently seeks new sources of funding in order to cope with this demand.
About our work
Four-year-old Elisabeth is a lively child, happy and full of energy. She has spina bifida and hydrocephalus which means that she cannot walk or stand independently. Her parents used to find it extremely difficult to lift her and her wheelchair into their car and this severely limited the kinds of things they could do as a family. Despite her disability Elisabeth goes to mainstream school and loves going to the park and enjoying days out with her family. Motability provided her with ramped access for the rear of their car, so that Elisabeth can access her car easily whilst seated in her wheelchair.
How we could spend a grant made to Motability:
· £400 could pay for a push/pull brake/accelerator hand control unit for someone who is unable to use foot pedals.
· £1,000 pays for a course of 39 driving lessons for a young learner driver
· £3,000 could buy a wheelchair hoist to enable a disabled person to easily load and carry their wheelchair with them in their car.
We are indebted to the grant making organisations that make our charitable work possible and would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of those who support us.
