There’s a lot to keep up with in everyday life. The Motability Scheme gives disabled people the essential support they need to keep doing the things many of us take for granted.
Whether that’s going to hospital appointments, getting to work, doing the school run, popping to the shops, or spending time with friends and family.
For many, it can feel like a lifeline, helping to protect the freedom and independence we all depend on.

Things people get wrong about the Scheme
There are some common misconceptions about how the Motability Scheme works and the difference it makes. Here are the facts.
Myth: ‘The Motability Scheme gives people free cars’
Fact: Cars on the Motability Scheme are not free. Customers use their qualifying mobility allowance to lease a vehicle.
The government decides who gets a qualifying mobility allowance, not us. Our role is to help disabled people who qualify for the Scheme stay mobile, giving them more freedom and independence.
Myth: ‘The Scheme is a waste of taxpayers’ money’
Fact: The Motability Scheme helps disabled people get to work, stay independent and travel more freely. It also supports jobs and businesses across the UK.
For every £1 of disability allowance spent on the Scheme, £1.50 is generated for the UK economy. The Scheme also contributes £5.4 billion to the UK economy and supports 40,660 jobs.*
