Passenger Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Travel with your wheelchair. You can ride in these, or store your wheelchair. A supplier will bring one to your home so you can make sure it’s right for you.

What is a passenger Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle?

These are the most common type of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) on the Scheme and they’re a popular choice for wheelchair users. They’re specially adapted so you can travel in your wheelchair, as a passenger.

You’ll usually access this Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle using a ramp or lift, then you or someone else will need to secure your wheelchair with tie-downs.

How is it different from a car?

You can travel without leaving your wheelchair, in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. In a car, you’d need to transfer out of your wheelchair and store it.

At a glance

  • You do not need to leave your wheelchair to travel
  • It’s simpler to get in and out
  • Good for long journeys
  • Up to eight people
  • Your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle might be larger than the vehicle you're used to travelling in
  • Think about the space you'll need around your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle when it's parked
