Can I learn to drive in my Scheme vehicle and get help with driving lessons?
Yes, if you have a Motability Scheme lease, you can learn to drive in your Scheme vehicle. There must be at least one fully qualified driver on your lease who can legally accompany you while you’re learning.
If you’re under 25, you’ll also need to make sure your Scheme vehicle is suitable for a driver of your age.
When can I start learning to drive?
If you receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Child Disability Payment, you can apply for your provisional licence three months before your 16th birthday. It will be valid when you turn 16.
You can only have one learner driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance at a time.
Can I get help with the cost of driving lessons?
The Motability Foundation might be able to fund up to 40 hours of driving lessons. These are with a local driving instructor and arranged through AA Driving School.
To apply, you need to:
- Have a Scheme lease, or have a vehicle on order that will arrive within the next four months
- Have a provisional UK driving licence
- Have passed your theory test
- Receive a means tested benefit
