Which countries can I take my car to?

You can only take your Motability Scheme car to the locations listed below. 

You can travel to all the locations on this list, but the breakdown cover and support you get can be different when travelling outside the UK.  

We recommend getting travel insurance before you go. This can cover unexpected costs that are not included in your all-inclusive Scheme package, such as medical emergencies or cancelled trips. 

You might see different locations listed in documents from RAC and Direct Line Motability. Always use the list on this page to check where you can take your Scheme car. 

You can travel here with RAC European Breakdown Cover 

You can also travel to these four locations, but RAC European Breakdown Cover is not available 

If your car breaks down in one of these locations, you’ll need to arrange and pay for recovery yourself.

Your support when you travel outside the UK 

Besides the four locations listed above, your all-inclusive package still applies. But the support you get can work differently from the support you get in the UK. 

For example:

• If you break down on a private motorway, you might need to contact the motorway provider instead of RAC European Breakdown Cover
• You might need to pay some costs upfront and claim them back afterwards

When RAC sends your VE103 certificate, they’ll also send you useful information about driving abroad, including what to take with you and what to do if you break down. 

How long you can travel for 

You can take your Scheme car abroad for up to 90 days in total in any 12-month period with a valid VE103 certificate. 

If you plan to be abroad for more than 90 days, you must: 

• Contact us at least three weeks before you travel. You must have written permission before you go 
• Check with your allowance provider before you travel. You’ll need to make sure your allowance will continue while you’re away
