How the Motability Scheme works

Patients can use a qualifying mobility allowance to lease a new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle), scooter or powered wheelchair. They can also add adaptations to help with driving, getting in and out, or storage.

To be eligible, customers must receive, or have at least 12 months left, of a qualifying mobility allowance.

We receive payments direct from the patient’s allowance provider.

See how it works to check if one of your patients is eligible.

Why this matters for patients

  • For many patients, mobility affects health, independence and access to care
  • Greater independence in everyday life
  • Less reliance on taxis or family and friends
  • Access to vehicles with adaptations if needed

We'll help you support your patients

Healthcare professionals have a valuable role to play.

You do not need to complete forms or carry out assessments.

You can help by:

  • Letting patients know the Scheme may be an option
  • Directing them to check eligibility
  • Sharing trusted information
