How your WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle can get you to work
Hannah Morgan has been a Scheme customer for over 20 years. With the help of her WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle, she's now been able to attend university and start her career.
Hannah attended college in Birmingham, studying health and social care before completing a degree in Special Educational Needs at Wolverhampton University. Those qualifications led her to support young adults with disabilities.
Hannah would not have been able to attend any of these without the help of her WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle. She says: "If I hadn't had the use of my Motability Scheme car, I wouldn't have been able to get to work and show my employer how reliable I could be.”
Public transport can be a struggle for many customers, making it difficult to attend classes and get to work on time.
“To get to work from my house would take more than two hours using public transport. That’s almost five hours of a commute each day.”
Fitting your powered wheelchair inside your WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle
A WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle also gives our customers a greater sense of independence.
Hannah also uses a powered wheelchair to help her get around. "Without the Motability Scheme we wouldn't have been able to have the type of car that the chair can fit in."
Hannah’s WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle is ideal for her, as it has the necessary space to fit her powered wheelchair, which other vehicles might not have.
“If we were limited to my past cars; I wouldn't have been able to take the chair that’s so important.” In Hannah's case, a WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle is ideal, but the Scheme also has a wide range of adaptations to help you:
Your WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle could help you stay independent
Having her WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle means Hannah can complete everyday tasks that she previously would not have been able to do on her own.
“My WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle means I can do things that most people take for granted, like do my shopping, go to medical appointments, and meet friends”
A recent milestone Hannah has been able to achieve is moving into her own flat. “I feel like I've got my own routine now and more independence.”
Having another driver to support you
Hannah has been a customer on the Scheme since she was five years old. Her mum Mandy has always been an important figure in her life, taking Hannah to many of her hospital appointments.
You can add up to three drivers on your Scheme lease. This could be friends, family, or carers. It gives you more flexibility to get around in a way that works for you.
Having someone who can drive your Scheme car when you cannot is important, as it lets you share your journeys. This person can pick you up from medical appointments or drive when you may not be able to.
Giving back to the community
Hannah now supports young adults with disabilities at Queen Alexandra College. She helps them build confidence and independence. "Seeing the progress makes me feel incredibly proud."
This is the same college she attended with the help of her Scheme WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle. “I love the work I do; providing support, and access to opportunities, for young adults helps them reach their potential and enjoy their lives.”
"In some ways Hannah is a role model," Mandy says, as “it's nice for them to see someone who faces similar challenges to them, working and living independently.”
