WAV stands for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. This means you can travel in the vehicle while seat in your wheelchair

Does my vehicle meet the ULEZ criteria and will I have to pay the charge?

The Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge was introduced in April 2019 to discourage drivers of high-polluting vehicles from using roads in central London.

Most of our cars and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles) were built after ULEZ was introduced, so lots of them already meet the ULEZ criteria.

How to check

If you’re not sure, you can check if your vehicle meets the criteria(opens in a new window).

What to do if your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle does not meet the ULEZ criteria

This depends on your circumstances:

If you have a Blue Badge

You’ll need to pay the ULEZ charge unless your vehicle meets the ULEZ criteria or meets one of the these ‘grace periods’:

If you have a car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle with the disabled class tax

You will not need to pay the ULEZ charge until 24 October 2027, as long as your tax class does not change.

After this date, you’ll need to pay the daily ULEZ charge if your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle does not meet the ULEZ emission standards.

If you're receiving a disability allowance

This needs to be any of the same qualifying allowances you need to join the Scheme, or the standard rate of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or standard rate of Adult Disability Payment (ADP).

Or your disability or your child’s disability needs to meet one of these criteria(opens in a new window).

If you meet either of those, you’ll need to apply for this grace period(opens in a new window).

When you do, you’ll need to send:

  • Images of your vehicle’s logbook (V5C)
  • Your photo ID
  • Your allowance award letter (it needs to be no older than 12 months)
  • A letter on headed paper, signed by your GP or paediatrician, confirming your child's medical condition and age if the applicant is a child under three
  • Your SR1 form (previously called a DS1500 form) if the applicant is terminally ill
  • Your Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI) if the applicant is registered blind

You can only apply for this once per vehicle.

If you get this, you will not need to pay the ULEZ charge until 25 October 2027, as long as your tax class does not change.

If you pay for your own tax

If you’ve chosen to pay for your tax privately or bought your vehicle after you’ve left the Motability Scheme, you’ll need to check if you’re exempt(opens in a new window).
