What to do if you've had an accident

Please raise a claim for your scooter or powered wheelchair in the ‘Insurance’ section of your Motability Scheme online account, or call our insurance provider on 0800 294 0790 to report it.

Some tips

  • Do not admit fault or deny the claim, negotiate, or promise to pay the claim, without written permission from our insurance provider
  • Exchange details with everyone involved (including any witnesses) and each give your name, address, phone number and insurer name
  • Raise a claim as soon as possible to report the accident, even if there's no obvious damage or injury
  • Send all correspondence you get about the accident to our insurance provider's claims department
  • Fully cooperate when they investigate the claim. If you do not, your claim could be declined, and you might not be able to lease through the Scheme again

What's covered by your insurance

  • Damage that stops the product working safely

  • Theft of the product

  • Legal liability for any damage caused up to £2,000,000

  • Uninsured loss recovery and legal expenses (up to £25,000)

  • Cover for using your scooter or powered wheelchair in the European Union for up to 30 days in total in a 12-month period

  • Cover for permanent adaptations and/or accessories given to you with the product by your dealer that are needed to help you to use it

  • Replacement keys, up to three times during your lease, if they're lost or stolen within the British Isles

What's not covered by your insurance

  • Personal belongings – you'll need to arrange your own insurance for items like coats, bags and walking sticks. One option could be to extend your household insurance cover

  • Cosmetic damage – damage that does not stop you using your scooter or powered wheelchair safely and effectively

  • Unauthorised and uninsured users – only the person on your insurance is insured to use your product. Other people can move it, if you give your permission, but cannot drive it. If you let someone else drive it, you might be held responsible for any loss, damage or legal liabilities, and might not be able to lease through the Scheme again

Other benefits

Uninsured loss items

These are any items that are not covered by your insurance, like personal belongings. If you're involved in an accident caused by someone else who has been identified, our insurance provider will try to get your uninsured losses back from them.

If you're injured, they'll appoint solicitors to act for you.

Recovering uninsured losses can take a long time and is not always possible, and you might need to show proof of your losses.

Legal liabilities

If you're in an accident which causes bodily injury or death of others, or damage to property through using your product, our insurance provider will cover the legal liabilities as long as the user is the disabled person on the insurance policy.

Loss of use benefit

If you cannot use your scooter or powered wheelchair because of loss or damage, we'll try to give you an alternative to keep you mobile, where appropriate.

If a temporary replacement is not suitable for your needs, you might be able to claim for a 'loss of use' benefit.

Read your terms and conditions and Insurance Cover Booklet to see all the conditions.
