Transferring from Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to Child Disability Payment

Social Security Scotland have assumed responsibility for disability assistance payments in Scotland from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). As part of these changes, children living in Scotland that currently receive DLA will have their award transferred to Child Disability Payment, which replaces DLA in Scotland. Transfers began on 11 October 2021 and are expected to continue until spring 2023.

Who is affected by these changes?

These changes will only affect children and young people living in Scotland that currently receive DLA.

Transfers will begin with anyone aged between 15 and a half and 17 years old. Once the transfer is complete, they will continue to be eligible to receive Child Disability Payment until they are 18.

Please note that you cannot choose to remain on DLA or have the DWP manage your Child Disability Payment award. However, any other benefits you receive from the DWP will be unaffected by this transfer.

How will I know when I am being transferred?

Social Security Scotland and the DWP will work together throughout the transfer process. Once Social Security Scotland have your details, they will send you a letter to advise that the transfer has begun, but your DLA payments will continue to be made by the DWP during the transfer.

It will take around three to four months to complete the transfer and Social Security Scotland will then write to you again letting you know that the transfer has ended, when your Child Disability Payment award begins and when they will start paying the new allowance.

Will I need a reassessment?

Social Security Scotland will use information from your existing DLA award to pay you the same Child Disability Payment rate, so you do not need to do anything unless your circumstances change.

If your needs or personal details change during the transfer, you need to tell the DWP as soon as possible. This is because the DWP holds the information about your benefit until Social Security Scotland takes over your payments. They will then pass the information to Social Security Scotland.

You can contact the DWP by calling 0800 121 4600.

How will this affect my Motability Scheme lease?

You should not experience any disruption to your Motability Scheme lease during this transfer. The DWP will continue to make DLA payments to us until you are transferred to Child Disability Payment.

Social Security Scotland will then become responsible for making these payments but will pay the same amount on the same day with no gaps in your payment schedule.
