Adaptations after leaving the Motability Scheme
Adaptations can help you to drive your car, transport a wheelchair or scooter, or access your car more easily. Once you have your own car, you can get adaptations installed yourself.
What adaptations are available?
Typically, adaptations fall into three categories. They can help you:
- Stow your wheelchair or scooter
- Get into and out of the car
If you need some help to find out more, there is a lot of information available. For example, Rica’s guide on car controlsOpens in new window .

Choosing an installer
All Motability Scheme adaptations installers will also fit adaptations to non-Scheme vehicles, so you can use our online tool to find an adaptation installer . Just enter your town or postcode to find installers near you. You can also search by adaptation type or installer name.
Replacing Motability Scheme adaptations
If you had adaptations fitted to your Motability Scheme car, and you lose your allowance as a result of an unsuccessful DLA to PIP reassessment, we will help with the costs of fitting new adaptations of the same type to a non-Scheme vehicle (within our given timescales). We will send you a letter to explain the options available to you and can discuss your individual situation.
